The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey wins an Annie Award

What has roots as nobody sees,
Is taller than trees
Up, up, up it goes,
And yet never grows?

The above riddle is told to Bilbo Baggins by Gollum in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey during the famous Riddles in the Dark scene where Bilbo attempts to defeat Gollum in a game of riddles in order to escape the Misty Mountains.

That scene undoubtedly played a role in earning the Weta Digital special effects team an Annie Award for the best character animation in a live action production. The Annie Awards are given annually to recognize outstanding animation work in film and television.

Two Weta Digital teams were actually nominated for the same category, one worked on Gollum and the other worked on The Goblin King. The names of the people who worked on both characters are listed at the bottom of this article.

It's nice to see the first Hobbit film get an award for some of the amazing work that was done by the cast and crew on that movie. Hopefully we can see The Desolation of Smaug win in some (or all) of the categories it was nominated for in the upcoming Academy Awards.

Congratulations to Weta Digital!
